Candy Cane Cookies
These cookies are a bit a of a nuisance to make but are always a huge hit with the family.

1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
Beat until light.

Add and beat in;
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp peppermint extract

Add and mix well;
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt

When dough is made divide into half, putting one half aside.
Colour second half by kneading in red food colouring.
Take a small ball of each and roll each to cylinder shape. Press white and red together gently and roll out to a bit longer than finger length. Twist so it looks like a candy stick. Roll lightly in coloured (I use red) sugar. Put a crook on the end and put on a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 355 F for about 12 minutes. Let cool before removing from pan.
