Date Squares
I got this recipe from a very sweet old lady years ago. Her name was Mildred Ganong. She didn't have many things that she baked but what she did always tasted great. The secret to her date squares is that she mixed in seeded raisins with her dates.

Base:
3/4 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 cup whole wheat flour

1 1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 tsp soda

Mix butter and brown sugar. Then, add remaining ingredients. Mix well. Press half of the mixture into the bottom of an 8x12 pan. Put the other half aside for now.

Filling:
1/2 pound dates
1/2 pound seeded raisins
1 cup of water (adding more when necessary)
1 cup of brown sugar

Put ingredients for filling into a sauce pan and simmer until dates and raisins are soft and mixture has thickened. Do not let dry out. Keep adding water until dates are soft and juicy.

Pour filling over base and sprinkle left over crumbs on top. Bake at 350 degrees until top is browned.
